According to Daniel Love's lucid-dreaming guidebook, Are You Dreaming? A lucid dream is essentially the confluence of two seemingly conflicting states of mind: dreaming and consciousness. We can either add consciousness to dreams (as in a waking-induced lucid dream) or dreams to consciousness in order to create lucidity (a dream-induced lucid dream). We, therefore, have methods for gaining lucidity, which aid the dreamer in realizing that they are dreaming, and methods for maintaining lucidity, which aid the dreamer in maintaining consciousness (lucidity) while dozing off. The goal is to combine consciousness and dreams in any case.


Although such abrupt changes in consciousness may appear unreal, we do "fall asleep" non-lucidly every time we lose ourselves in a daydream or let our attention wander from mindfulness to mindlessness. We can be fully present one second and then be immersed in fantasy the next. As we discuss the hypnagogic and hypnopompic (from the Greek words hypnos "sleep" and pompe "leading away") states, we'll return to the idea that the transitions between awake and dreaming also occur when we dip in and out of sleep in the early morning hours or while we're falling asleep.
